Writing Blogs and Social Media Posts Has Never Been Easier! Our Guide to Using AI Ethically
At MOG, we believe AI is a tool, not a replacement for originality or humanity; so here’s our tips to using it properly to write better, faster and more ethically.
Let’s be real: writing can be a chore! Finding the right words, the right hook, the right tone; it’s no small feat, especially when modern life requires us to juggle so much. But now with AI firmly cemented in the creative space, writing has never before been more accessible. The problem is it’s just so easy to get lazy with it and if we’re not careful it could devalue and discredit the majority of content online.
So what can we do to minimise the potential for an online ‘AI wasteland’ and how can we use this tool ethically?
Provide Meaningful Context
The number one mistake people make is throwing a vague prompt at AI and expecting something masterful. If you want LLMs to provide meaningful content, you need to feed it details, nuance and context. Think: target audience, tone, purpose, history of the project, key talking points etc. AI is not a servant, it’s a collaboration tool.
Do Your Research First
Another large misnomer is when people rely on AI to do all the legwork. You need to bring your own insights, sources, and notes to the table and provide it to the LLM in order to receive coherent and useful responses. Use AI like a research assistant, sifting through your research and knowledge base to uncover new patterns and extrapolate your ideas.
Edit Like a Human
It honestly still feels weird to to say this, but you must always, always proof-read and edit your work! AI can get you some of the way there, but without you reading, editing and developing your own tone and style, the words can become meaningless and lack connection. It doesn’t feel good to be misled by AI content, so make sure the content you post has authenticity and your own voice, make it your own!
Fact-Check Everything
It’s no secret that LLMs have the dangerous tendency to be completely confident and yet completely wrong. Especially when the response is being influenced by lazy prompts. Always check your claims, follow your links and don’t publish blind.
Use Your Passion
The web deserves better than an endless deluge of self-replicating robot content. Your readers want to connect to something valuable, interesting and passionate. Use AI with purpose and ensure you are bringing your knowledge and personality to the table!
The Real Cost of AI
We can’t talk about AI and ethics without mentioning some of the major global issues we face.
The sheer computing power that the AI race requires is almost incomprehensible and not without serious side-effects. From fast-tracking climate change to contributing to global wealth inequality, AI is not a passive addition to our lives, it causes and prolongs suffering that is felt by people around the world today.
So this is not to argue for an AI boycott, but rather to reiterate the need to use it with purpose and intention. If our use of AI adds value to the world around us then it’s worth solving these issues to keep it around, but if we use it lazily and end up only degrading the internet we will all end up paying a hard price.
So yes; writing blogs and social posts has never been easier! But we need to approach this new tool with purpose, authenticity and a sense of responsibility. When we combine AI with real voices and rigourous standards, we not only save time but we actually add value to the world around us. The goal isn’t just to create more content; it’s about enhancing our understanding of things, sharing knowledge and connection, trading with each other and solving problems together.
